Leah couldn’t risk Olivia waking up and hearing her, so she curled into a tight ball on her bed, her knuckles pressed against her lips as she tried to contain the sobs that rolled through her body and demanded release.

Even though Ben had called her strong and brave, all she could focus on was his assumption that she’d been promiscuous. And because he doubted the character of a teenage girl who’d gotten into trouble, she knew he was hoping that Olivia’s curiosity about her roots wouldn’t lead to a decision to find her someday.

This is your punishment, she told herself. That you did meet your daughter and you can’t be her mother. You’ll always have to pay for the consequences of your sin….

The weight of the secret she was keeping from Ben pressed down on her.

This isn’t the blessing from God you thought it was, is it? And now you’re falling in love with Ben, too, and if he finds out who you are, you’re never going to have a chance to be with Olivia…or him.

Leah smiled. It wasn’t the first time God had used that simple, imperfect nativity set to speak to her.

The nativity had been a gift from the children of the first family that had hired her right after she’d started working at Tender Care. They were twin girls whose parents were on leave from the mission field, and they’d hired Leah for the summer while they traveled and raised support for their next trip overseas.

The nativity set had been given to the girls to keep them occupied over the summer months and Leah ended up supervising the painting of the tiny figurines. After a few days of listening to the girls, she borrowed their children’s Bible so she could read it for herself. On a hot summer day, Leah read the Christmas story while those ten-year-old girls patiently answered her questions about Jesus. Later that evening, it had been their mother, Rebecca, who’d listened while Leah had poured out her heart. She’d told Rebecca she didn’t deserve God’s love because of what she’d done and Rebecca had told her about God’s grace and forgiveness.
